The Implant Process in Lexington, Kentucky

The Dental Implant Process

The dental implant procedure requires many visits over several months. This is because the procedure involves placing an artificial tooth root into the jawbone and then waiting for it to heal. The patient needs to visit us for follow-up care during this period. The entire implant process usually takes six to eight months, and most patients don’t experience any disruption to their daily lives.

It begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Dr. Freano will create a personalized treatment plan after evaluating your oral health. The plan will include expected timeframe, procedures that he will provide, and more. If the treatment plan satisfies your wants and needs, Dr. Freano will continue the process. It is usually a three-step process that includes preparation, oral surgery, and restoration.

Preparing for the Procedure

If Dr. Freano finds underlying dental issues that can compromise the results, he will preform treatment for those issues first. This can include a tooth extraction, gum disease treatment and more. The implant procedure also requires that the patient have enough bone density in the jaw to accommodate a screw or metal post that will hold the artificial tooth in place. If not, the patient may need bone grafting before we can proceed. We want make sure your teeth and gums are healthy before we move on to the next step.

Placing the Dental Implant

The next step is oral surgery to place the implant post securely in your mouth. In many cases, Dr. Freano will be able to preform the surgical phase in his dental office. He may also work with a local oral surgeon or periodontist to coordinate the surgical phase of treatment.

The implant post is a metal anchor and small post that our dentist will surgically place into your jawbone. It’s a simple surgical procedure that does not take long to complete. After surgery, we will let your mouth heal over the implant post so that it integrates with the natural bone. The post will serve as a stable anchor and replacement tooth root for the new prosthetic teeth.

This healing process can take about three to six months. Dr. Freano will place a temporary prosthetic in your mouth so you can use your mouth while it heals.

Restoring the Dental Implant

While your mouth is healing, our dental laboratory is fabricating your new dental crown, denture, or bridge. After about three to six months, once the dental implant fully fuses with your jaw bone, Dr. Freano will attach the abutment to the implant post. The abutment is the piece that connects the implant post to the dental prosthetic. Then he will permanently secure the dental crown, dental bridge, or denture to the dental implant abutment.

We will make sure you leave the office with a beautiful new dental restoration that fits seamlessly with the rest of your smile.
